Mariana Martins de Carvalho, wins Eduardo da Cunha Serrão Award 2023 Award
The researcher Mariana Martins de Carvalho, from the FAUP's Center for Architectural and Urban Studies (CEAU/FAUP), won, unanimously, the Eduardo da Cunha Serrão Award in the PhD category with the thesis "Drawing the Ruin: registration, interpretation and communication. The example of the Roman city of Ebora", developed in the PhD Program in Architecture at FAUP. The award is given annually by the Portuguese Archaeologists Association and distinguishes PhD and Master's theses and dissertations presented the year before each edition of the award, or unpublished works, which focus on the archaeology of our country.
"My doctoral research focuses essentially on how knowledge of architecture and the tool of drawing can contribute to the analysis, interpretation, and reconstitution of archaeological remains; assuming a transdisciplinary look that seeks to encourage the crossing of these areas of knowledge" emphasizes Mariana Martins de Carvalho. This is why, for the researcher, it is of special importance that "this work, which started in the field of architecture, has been recognized by such a relevant institution in the field of archeology.
The thesis was supervised by Maria Pilar Miguel dos Reis, researcher at CEAU/FAUP, and Marta Oliveira, Jubilee Professor at FAUP.
Mariana Martins de Carvalho (Porto) is an Architect (FAUP), with a post-graduate degree in Architectural Heritage (CEAPA-FAUP), a degree in Painting (FBAUP) and a PhD in Architecture, study option - Architectural Heritage (PDA-FAUP). She is currently a collaborating researcher at the Center for Architectural and Urban Studies (CEAU) at FAUP and a researcher at ProChild CoLAB, where she integrates a multidisciplinary team. She develops, in her interdisciplinary practice, archaeological interpretation and reconstitution drawings, in collaboration with archaeologists, historians and architects.
In this edition, the jury also awarded, in the PhD category, two special mentions to the theses 'Monte dos Castelinhos and the dynamics of the Roman conquest of the Lisbon Peninsula and Baixo Tejo', by João Pimenta, and 'Boa Vista 1: an archaeological study of a ship in the Lisboa Ribeirinha (17th-18th century)', by Gonçalo Correia Lopes.
In the Master's category, the Prize was awarded to Mónica Patrícia Gomes de Almeida e Silva Corga with the dissertation 'The Living after Death - an approach to the mortuary management of the Tholoi 1 and 2 of Horta do João da Moura 1 (Ferreira do Alentejo) during the 3rd millennium BC', written as part of the Master's Degree in Archaeology at the Faculty of Arts, University of Porto (FLUP).
The jury for the Eduardo da Cunha Serrão Award was chaired by José Morais Arnaud, President of the Board of Directors of the Association of Portuguese Archaeologists, and composed of Andrea Martins and Luís Raposo, members of the Board, and José d'Encarnação and Vitor Oliveira Jorge, as invited specialists.
The Award Ceremony of the 8th edition of the Eduardo da Cunha Serrão Award will take place in the auditorium of the Carmo Archaeological Museum, in Lisbon, on May 26, at 5:30 pm.
