Maho photographer wins 1st edition Luís Ferreira Alves Prize 2025

June 30, 2025

Iranian photographer Maho has been awarded the Luis Ferreira Alves International Photography Prize, the first edition of which took place in 2025. The award was announced on June 28 at a ceremony held at the Casa da Arquitectura in Matosinhos.

The winning work, entitled ‘Frequent Whites’, features a series of images taken in 2024 in the city of Pardis, on the outskirts of Tehran. According to the organization, the photographs reflect ‘the austere rhythm of the apartment blocks’ of ‘a satellite city born reluctantly from the overflow of Tehran's dense breath’.

The second prize went to French photographer Cyrille Weiner, with ‘Oui avec plaisir’, while the third prize - in the form of a photographic voucher - was awarded to Spaniard Sergio Belinchón, author of the project ‘Provisional Atlas of Berlin’.

Special mentions were also awarded to ‘The Hidden Land’, by Iranian Sana Ahmadizadeh, and ‘Abstractions: Studies of the National Theatre’, by British Amelia Lancaster.

The Luis Ferreira Alves International Photography Prize is promoted by Porto City Council and Cityscopio - Associação Cultural. Launched by the photographer's heirs with the support of various organizations, it is a biennial program that aims to stimulate reflection on the relationship between photography and architecture. The competition has the support of FAUP, Casa da Arquitectura, the Northern Regional Coordination and Development Commission, the Marques da Silva Foundation and the Portuguese Architects' Association, among other institutions. It also has the support of various brands and organizations, such as CIN, the “la Caixa” Foundation / BPI, Canon, Metro do Porto and AMAG.
