Álvaro Siza awarded Extraordinary Prize and book 'New / Old - Fernando Távora Works' receives Honorable Mention Award
June 26th, 2024
Álvaro Siza was awarded the Extraordinary Prize for his entire professional career at the FAD Awards, given for the first time this year.
In the Thought and Criticism 2024 category, the book 'Novo / Antigo - Fernando Távora Obras' edited by Teresa Cunha Ferreira, David Ordóñez Castañón, Eleonora Fantini and published by FAUP, Fundação Marques da Silva and Edições Afrontamento, was awarded an Honorable Mention.
The jury, chaired by Javier Fernández Contreras and made up of Marta Poch and Roger Subirà, stressed that the publication "stands out for its use of drawing as a critical and research tool that enriches the overall discourse presented in the book", constituting "an excellent approach to the work of one of the masters of Portuguese architecture, offering new perspectives for understanding his approach to architecture through a set of intervention projects in architectural heritage, in many cases little published".
Profusely illustrated with photographs, plans, elevations and sections, the book brings together texts by the coordinators - Rui Fernandes Póvoas; José Bernardo Távora, José Miguel Rodrigues and Andrea Ugolini - and systematizes the research carried out on 14 works by Fernando Távora by Teresa Cunha Ferreira, David Ordoñez Castañon and Eleonora Fantini, with the contribution of Maria Milano and Fernando Cerqueira Barros.
'Novo / Antigo - Fernando Távora Obras', together with the book 'Fernando Távora: Conversas', is part of the Novo/Antigo publishing project on the theme of contemporary intervention in built heritage. They propose to introduce a critical narrative of the design and construction process, which could become a pedagogy for the teaching and professional practice of architects. The publications are the result of a partnership between FAUP, the Marques da Silva Foundation and Edições Afrontamento.
The Novo/Antigo publishing project, which is part of the UNESCO Chair in Heritage, Cities and Landscapes. Sustainable Management, Conservation, Planning and Design, begins with Fernando Távora (1923-2005) and is based on the premise of the conceptual and methodological coherence of the architect from Porto in his intervention in heritage contexts in Portugal.
Still within the scope of the FAD Awards, the Selected Editions include the books 'Manuel Botelho: Obra e projecto 1980-2008', edited by António Neves, Bruno Baldaia and Carlos Maia, with the support of FAUP; 'Cumplicidades: nos percursos de Álvaro Siza e Eduardo Souto de Moura' by Nuno Grande, foreword by Joana Couceiro and design by Ana Resende, both published by Circo de Ideias; and 'Paisaje pintoresco y entornos adecuados' by Eliana Sousa Santos, published by Ediciones Asimétricas / Iniciativa Digital Politécnica Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.
The FAD Prize was created in 1958 by ARQUIN-FAD. Asociación Interdisciplinaria de Diseño del Espacio and honors the best architecture and interior design projects on the Iberian Peninsula. In this edition, 53 applications were received for the FAD Prize for Thought and Criticism 2024.
