The training unit 'Heritage and Landscape. Management, Analysis, Design' will take place at FAUP and is part of the UNESCO Chair 'Heritage, Cities and Landscapes. Sustainable Management, Conservation, Planning and Design'.

The training proposes to promote interdisciplinarity between several areas of work - Architecture, Landscape Architecture, History of Art and Civil Engineering - fundamental for an understanding of the concept of heritage in a contemporary and broad sense (built and natural, material and immaterial), and as a vector for the qualified and sustainable development of cities, landscapes and territory.

The unit will have the participation of national and international guests, providing students with contact with real and external problems to the University.

Goals

Raise awareness of the importance of the multidisciplinary character of the study of heritage.

Acquire knowledge about methodologies, theories and contemporary practices of intervention in the built and landscape.

To deepen knowledge about management, rehabilitation, conservation, restoration and maintenance of heritage, considering its historical evolution and contemporary examples.

Develop skills in the field of architecture and landscape design, involving the relationship between research and its theoretical foundation with the design of the project.

Acquire knowledge about the history of landscape design and the management of cultural landscapes.

Develop skills of research, analysis and interpretation of sources (documentary, cartographic, iconographic, drawn, surveys, etc.).

Critically analyze international charters and conventions, Portuguese legislation and their applications.

Define and interpret the fundamental concepts of risk analysis and management.

Programmatic contents

The training unit proposes a critical approach to the concepts of heritage and landscape, including their historical and theoretical foundations, methodological and design tools, and safeguarding and management instruments. In this way, it is intended to deepen the knowledge in the scope of contemporary intervention in heritage and landscape, as a strategy of identity support of collective memory and factor of qualified and sustainable development, integrating the understanding of its multiple stratigraphies and agents.

The training is structured in the following programmatic lines:

Architectural and Urban Heritage
_Heritage: evolution of the concept and contemporary meanings.
_Theories and practices of intervention in the built. National and international examples.
_Methodologies and tools for characterization, diagnosis and design.
_Physical intervention (rehabilitation, maintenance, enhancement) and community participation strategies.

Cultural Landscape
_Concept of Landscape and Cultural Landscapes

Evolution and contemporary reflections

Interpretation and presentation of cultural landscapes
_Examples of conservation and restoration

Heritage Management
_Research, recognition and interpretation of sources

_Bodies, charters, recommendations and legislation

_Communication, education and dissemination of heritage.

Risk Analysis and Management

Risk analysis and management in built heritage
_Guidelines for the elaboration of a risk management plan
_Prevention as a tool for risk management in built heritage
_Recommendations for inspection, diagnosis and structural intervention.

The evaluation methodology is based on class attendance and participation, as well as collaborative work in groups oriented towards the elaboration of contributions to the management, analysis and design in an area of heritage and landscape value in the City of Porto.

Certification

Creditable as U. Porto option curricular unit (MIARQ-FAUP or other 2nd cycle courses), singular curricular unit (diploma supplement) or continuing education unit / free course (3 ECTS).

Workload - 3h per week (occasionally the frequency may be fortnightly)

Tuition fees - UP students 25€, Alumni 50€, External 75€

Applications

The application must be accompanied by a Curriculum Vitae and a Motivation Letter.

The ranking will be based on the Curriculum Vitae (academic and scientific, professional experience) and the Motivation Letter (structure and development, justification of the relevance of the UC in the academic, scientific and professional path), with the weighting of the first being 80% and the second 20%.

The available places will be distributed equally among the scientific areas of the training unit.

The training is aimed at U.Porto students from different disciplinary areas (Architecture, Art History, Landscape Architecture, Engineering, and related areas), mobility students, alumni, or other interested parties from outside U.Porto.
