Casa Cor de Rosa Yellow Tank Newt Party

Wednesday, May 29th, 6.30pm, Casa Cor de Rosa

As summer approaches, the evenings are getting milder and more conducive to gatherings and toasts in the fresh water. Next Wednesday, May 29, at 6.30 p.m., the CEAU and CIIMAR teams will present the restoration of Casa Cor de Rosa's Yellow Tank to the FAUP community. This will be the occasion for a small drink in the garden before sunset.

A natural watercourse, the Casa Cor de Rosa tank dried up decades ago when the city's infrastructure works channeled it into the urban network. The pond has now been reactivated as part of the MoRe Porto project, with the aim of monitoring and restoring the biodiversity of Porto's Urban Wetlands to promote biodiversity.

For the garden's biodiversity, the pond is a small oasis. Three types of plants have been introduced to oxygenate the water: submerged, emergent and floating. The flowering of these plants is yellow, hence the color that accompanies the pink of the house. With the water, the garden became home to a significant number of macro-invertebrates (dragonflies and beetles) and amphibians (newts, frogs and salamanders). These species, in turn, attract others, and the pond has once again become a point in the network of wetlands which, unfortunately, are in short supply in the city. Now dragonflies can once again circulate between the Massarelos valley and the ponds of the Botanical Garden.

The More Porto project is led by CIIMAR-UP and funded by the Belmiro de Azevedo Foundation. The revitalization of the Yellow Tank at Casa Cor de Rosa was carried out in collaboration with CEAU-FAUP.
