Novo/Antigo. Escola Do Porto: Obras Book presentation
July 23rd, 2025, Wednesday, 6pm, Palácio da Bolsa
On Wednesday, July 23rd, 2025, at 6pm, the presentation of the book 'Novo/Antigo. Escola do Porto: Obras', coordinated by Teresa Cunha Ferreira and David Ordóñez Castañón, a bilingual edition by Edições Afrontamento and FAUP.
As part of the Novo/Antigo editorial project, dedicated to the theme of intervention in the built environment and with a pedagogical dimension oriented towards the teaching and practice of architecture, this volume continues a line of research that already includes two titles on the work of Fernando Távora - one of which was awarded an honorable mention at the FAD Thought and Criticism Awards in 2024.
'New/Old. Escola do Porto: Obras' focuses on practices developed by architects trained at the Escola Superior de Belas Artes do Porto (ESBAP), in which a remarkable pedagogical legacy for the practice of the profession is recognized.
The book documents twenty-two works of intervention in the built environment by various architects, including Alcino Soutinho, Álvaro Siza, Fernando Távora, José Carlos Loureiro, Alfredo Matos Ferreira, Beatriz Madureira, Pedro Ramalho, Alfredo Viana de Lima, Bernardo Ferrão, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Francisco Barata, Adalberto Dias, Alexandre Alves Costa, Sérgio Fernandez, João Mendes Ribeiro and José Gigante.
The selected works are presented from an interpretative narrative of the design and construction process - before, during and after the intervention - going beyond the mere illustration of the final result. The graphic and textual documentation, much of it unpublished, is supported by research in archives (Marques da Silva Foundation, FAUP Documentation Center, Casa da Arquitectura, Serralves Foundation, among others) and the use of drawing as a research tool.
The analysis of the selected works is enriched by critical texts by national and international authors, who together offer multiple perspectives on the legacy of the Porto School as a contemporary approach to intervention in pre-existing buildings that is open to new syntheses and resignifications, in continuity with tradition.
This volume is the result of research carried out between 2022 and 2024 as part of the FCT-funded project Atlas do Projeto em Património Arquitectónico: Contributos da Escola do Porto (EXPL/ART-DAQ/1551/2021), at CEAU/FAUP, and is part of the UNESCO Chair "Heritage, Cities and Landscapes. Sustainable Management, Conservation, Planning and Design".
At the end of the session, a Port of Honor will be served in the cloisters of the Palácio da Bolsa.
