Honorary Doctorate Award Ceremony | Gonçalo Byrne Award

At the proposal of the Faculty of Architecture (FAUP), the University of Porto will award an Honorary Doctorate to architect Gonçalo Byrne on 20 November 2024, for the importance of his work, his teaching career (including a multitude of collaborations with the FAUP), the numerous distinctions he has obtained, as well as his work as President of the Order of Architects.

The ceremony will take place in the FAUP's Fernando Távora Auditorium.

At the Honorary Doctorate ceremony, Gonçalo Byrne's godfather will be the architect Professor Domingos Tavares, and the presentation will be made by Professor Luís Soares Carneiro (eulogy for the doctoral candidate).

Gonçalo Byrne (Alcobaça, 1941) has a degree in Architecture from the Lisbon School of Fine Arts and an Honorary Doctorate from the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon (2004) and the University of Sassari (2012). He is the founder and managing director of the architecture studio GONÇALO BYRNE Arquitectos, Lda., which comprises a multidisciplinary team with different levels of experience in carrying out architectural and urban planning projects. He recently completed his term as President of the National Board of Directors of the Portuguese Architects' Association (2020-2022), having contributed to the most recent debates around the problem of housing, which he has always identified as fundamental to city building, and those emerging issues currently facing the discipline of architecture.Gonçalo Byrne is the author of an extensive and diverse body of work in terms of scale, programme and context, recognised nationally and internationally for its architectural, cultural and heritage expression.
His work has been widely recognised and awarded, including the A.I.C.A. / S.E.C. Prize (1998), the Gold Medal of the French Academy of Architecture (2000) and the Piranesi / Prix de Rome (2014). In 1995, he was decorated by the President of the Republic Dr Mário Soares with the Grand Officer's Cross of the Order of Infante D. Henrique and, in 2006, by the President of the Republic Dr Jorge Sampaio with the Grand Officer's Cross of the Order of Santiago de Espada. In 2024, he was awarded the Medal of the City of Lisbon. At the same time, he has developed an important teaching career in the area of Architectural Design as a Visiting Professor at various universities. He frequently sits on juries for competitions and awards.
