About the book 'Habitar Lisboa . An architectural perspective on a contemporary crisis'
Lisbon is being plagued by an unprecedented housing crisis. The exponential rise in the cost of housing, the combined result of the financialization of housing and the lack of continued investment in public policies, means that every Portuguese is, or knows someone, affected by the crisis. There is a lively public debate, but little has been said about the buildings that will shape the political strategies that are being designed and implemented. What city do we want to build to respond to the problem? What role can architecture play in this context?Habitar Lisboa. An architectural perspective on a contemporary crisis is a CCB, Dinâmia'CET ISCTE and Monade publication that presents, in summary form, the conjuncture and the hypotheses for action to think about the construction of the city. The book includes an overview of the most charismatic architectures that have resulted from the public housing policies developed in Lisbon over 50 years of democracy. In the same vein, it seeks to review the main projects currently on the table, presenting analytical views of the current situation and freely envisioning plans for the future in the form of a dialogue, essay or manifesto. The book will be presented by Marta Sequeira and André Tavares.

About the conference
Rowan Moore's latest book, 'Property, the Myth that Built the World', argues that the social wealth of property can be used to achieve quality, affordable homes. At the conference 'How to Fix a Housing Crisis', Rowan Moore will present the ways in which this principle can be put into practice to solve pressing housing needs, with particular reference to the successes and failures of contemporary Britain.

Rowan Moore is the architecture critic for the Observer | The Guardian and was named Critic of the Year at the 2014 British Press Awards. He is the author of the books 'Slow Burn City', 'Why we Build' and 'Property the myth that built the world'.

About the More than Houses Program
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of April 25, 1974, the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto is organizing the "More than Houses" programme. This anniversary deserves to be commemorated with a reflection on issues that then and now remain a challenge and an unfulfilled need. To this end, this initiative brings together the Schools of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Fine Arts in Portugal, contributing a critical and propositional reflection on the contemporary challenges of housing and public space in building an intercultural society and promoting global citizenship. The program, which began in April 2023, includes seminars, exhibitions, publications and workshops, to instigate, inform and communicate the research produced by students at university institutions in the 2023/2024 academic year. With reference to the memory of the experience of the housing programs that took place immediately after April 25, 1974, namely the Local Ambulatory Support Service (SAAL), the aim is to make a contribution to the future that we want for 2074, 100 years after April 25.
