2nd Iberian Conference on Mollinology Call for papers

Call for papers until 28 February 2025

The FAUP's Centre for Architecture and Urbanism Studies, as part of the research work of the PACT group - Heritage of the Architecture of the City and Territory, in collaboration with Vila do Conde Town Council and APPA-VC - Vila do Conde Heritage, Archaeology and Museums Protection Association, is organising the 2nd Iberian Molinology Days, which will take place at the Vila do Conde Memory Centre from May 15 to 17, 2025.

Following on from the event previously held in Lousada, this edition aims to deepen scientific reflection on the preservation, safeguarding and enhancement of mollinological heritage at risk of disappearing, based on multiple interdisciplinary visions in the areas of architecture, landscaping, archaeology, history, biology, ecology, hydraulics, geography, water resources, energy, among others.

The meeting aims to encourage interdisciplinary debate in the area of molinological heritage, promote the exchange of knowledge at national and international level and raise awareness among the general public of the importance of this heritage at risk.

Call for papers

Molinological heritage should be understood as a composite element of a broad system whose dimension extends beyond the mill itself to include the territory, the landscape, heritage (tangible and intangible), water resources and even natural ecosystems. Interested parties are invited to submit communication proposals in the field of molinological heritage and associated traditional architecture, in various disciplinary areas, namely: architecture, landscape design, archaeology, history, biology, ecology, hydraulics, geography, engineering, water resources, energy, among others. Communication proposals can be conceived around the following thematic axes:

1. Molinological heritage
Analysis, characterisation or architectural intervention for the rehabilitation of molinological heritage (watermills, hydraulic mills, windmills, animal or manual traction mills, and/or other associated structures).

2. Bread cycle
Interconnections between traditional mills and popular architecture, both in terms of territorial relations and architectural or socio-cultural relations.

3. River landscape
Studies, plans or landscape intervention projects that integrate the molinological heritage of water, wind or even the valorisation of traditional hydraulic heritage.

4. Traditional technology
Proto-industrial production devices powered by water, wind or animal power, construction systems and/or architectural typologies associated with mills.

5. Riverside ecosystems
Studies linking the issues of river ecosystem conservation with the safeguarding, preservation and valorisation of cultural heritage.

6. Renewable energies
Reconversion of the mollinological heritage into electricity micro-production systems, both from a historical perspective and for contemporary use.
