Noémia Herdade Gomes

Noémia Herdade Gomes (Angola, 1969) Graduated with a Fine Arts degree in Painting (FBAUP, 1993), earned a Master's in Theatre Design (Slade School, 1997) at University College London (UCL) and received a PhD in Drawing from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Barcelona with the thesis "Drawing - Interactions and extensions in the process, project and artistic work. Case study of William Kentridge" (2011), developed during the period she lived in Johannesburg (2006-2010) and collaborated in the studio of the artist William Kentridge. The thesis was awarded the Premi Extraordinari de Doctorat by the University of Barcelona in 2013. She taught at the Porto Superior School of Art (ESAP) (1998-2001), at the School of Arts of the Catholic University (1999-2001) and, since 2000, at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP), where she has been an Assistant Professor since 2011. In 2012, she became a researcher at the Centre for Architectural and Urban Studies (CEAU-FAUP), in the group Architecture: Theory, Design, History (ATPH), and is now coordinating "The Drawing Collection" research programme. Her research is currently focused on student drawings at FAUP, using new technologies and digital archives, on extensions of Drawing for different audiences, and on reinventing the language of drawing, particularly through observation. In addition to her work as a lecturer and researcher, she maintains a steady artistic output, producing visual art and curatorial projects. She concluded a post-doctoral project in 2023 titled "William Kentridge: Máquinas Criativas," which continues her exploration of the intersections between drawing, artistic processes, and technology.

Open Timeline of Artists for Pedagogical Study start 2015-2016

The platform is essentially focused on architects' drawings, with the aim of creating an interactive working tool where students and teacher can insert images relating to different works, in a continuous process, carried out year after year, cumulatively increasing the collection and sharing and research. Drawing Dialogo digital drawing process: a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), an early form of Artificial Intelligence (AI) over 300+ original drawings of FAUP by its architect, Álvaro Siza.

We will also work alongside a digital drawing process: a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), an early form of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which has been trained on over 300+ original drawings of FAUP by its architect, Álvaro Siza. This type of machine drawing learns from recognising and interrelating common features found on existing drawings while making visible the entire process of finding and associating patterns, transfiguring the original drawings into an unexpected self-generative drawing series. The students’ 200+ hand-drawings will be scanned and added to the GAN, slowly merging Siza’s older drawings with the students’ new drawings to create a new polyphonic drawing animation about the long and multi-layered life of the buildings and landscapes of FAUP. Parabéns Álvaro Siza!

Congratulations to Álvaro Siza on his exhibition at Note in Lisbon! The showcase features a drawing created by Álvaro Siza during an interview for the Colecção de Desenhos project in December 2021. Additionally, there is a film on display, produced through the Drawing in Dialogue program, between The Bartlett S and FAUP, 2022 showcasing drawings made by Siza during the construction process of FAUP. The film is generated by artificial intelligence, offering a unique perspective on Siza's architect creations.
