Abstract

This project aims to develop sustainable and compatible mortars for early 20th heritage buildings conservation, addressing the lack of knowledge about this period binders.

CemRestore addresses the lack of knowledge of mortars used in early 20th century buildings and the research of new more compatible repair mortars, thus reducing the risk of harmful conservation interventions. The investigation and production of innovative mortars manufactured by replacing cement with industrial residues will lead to a more sustainable conservation and the lowering of CO2 emissions and waste disposal. The project aims for a deep interaction between the research team and the industry for the dissemination of the results and identification of the needs of the industrial sector. The mortars resulting from the project will form the basis of a new generation of pre-mixed mortars and a new product for the industry to explore.

Address the problem of 20th Century mortars repair, an issue that is necessary to answer both in Portugal, as well as throughout Europe and attain knowledge on 20th Century binders used in these heritage buildings. Determine a range of characteristics to formulate compatible mortars for early 20th Century buildings conservation, and at the same time to study the potential use of residues in premixed mortars, improving mortar sustainability. Monitor these renders' environmental exposure. Contribute towards a positive economic output by a clear interaction with national companies working on these sectors.
