Professor Manuel Correia Fernandes receives Medal of Merit from Porto City Council Award

July 10th, 2025

Architect Manuel Correia Fernandes, a former FAUP professor, was awarded the Municipal Medal of Merit by Porto City Council at a ceremony held last Wednesday, July 9, at the Paços do Concelho. The distinction is part of the City Medals, awarded annually to citizens and institutions that have made a notable contribution to the city in a wide range of areas.

Among those honored was architect José Carlos Marques, a former FAUP student, who was also awarded the Municipal Medal of Merit.

With a degree in Architecture from the Porto School of Fine Arts (ESBAP) in 1966, Manuel Correia Fernandes began his teaching career in 1972 at the same school and later joined the FAUP faculty, where he taught until 2009. Throughout this career, he played an active role in academic life, having been a member and elected president of the Board of Directors, Scientific and Pedagogical Councils, as well as the Assembly of Representatives.

At FAUP, he directed the Master's Course in Methodologies for Intervention in Architectural Heritage and was also a lecturer in master's programs at the Faculties of Engineering and Economics at the University of Porto. He was also a member of the U.Porto Senate Assembly.

The City Medals are traditionally awarded on 9 July, the date that marks the entry of King Pedro IV into Porto in 1832, during the Siege, and symbolizes the city's spirit of resistance and freedom. This year, more than half a hundred personalities and entities were honored in a session that celebrated their merit, dedication and civic and cultural impact on the life of the city.
