FAUP researchers awarded FAD Prize for Thought and Criticism 2023

October 21, 2023

The book Arquitectura do Bacalhau & Outras Espécies, by FAUP researchers André Tavares and Diego Inglez de Souza, has been awarded the FAD Prize in the category Thought and Criticism, awarded annually by the independent cultural association Arquinfad.

The jury for this category was chaired by Anna Martínez Duran, accompanied by Rafael Gómez-Moriana and Lluís Alexandre Casanovas Blanco. In its justification, the jury highlights the "critical approach and environmental concern, by exploring the interrelationships between architecture, territory, technology, as well as social and political aspects, from a phenomenon apparently distant from architecture, such as the fishing of cod, sardines and other species, in the areas of Portuguese influence".

The jury also highlights "the sensitivity with which the authors trace, through architecture and using archive documents and high-quality graphic reproductions, the pressure that human action has exerted and continues to exert on ecosystems, at a time when we are more aware than ever of their fragility".

Arquitectura do Bacalhau, published by Dafne Editora, sets out the first stage of the 'Fishing Architecture' research project, which began in 2017, coordinated by André Tavares. The work, currently underway at FAUP's Center for Architecture and Urbanism Studies, has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) of 2 million euros for the period 2022 to 2027, in order to expand the hypotheses set out in this book to the North Atlantic.

In addition to the book by the FAUP researchers, the FAP Prize for Thought and Criticism 2023 also honored the work "España fea: El caos urbano, el mayor fracaso de la democracia", by Spanish journalist Andrés Rubio.

It should be remembered that the book Colónias Agrícolas, by Filipa de Castro Guerreiro, a professor and researcher at FAUP, made the list of finalists for the FAD Thought and Criticism awards. The book is the result of work carried out at FAUP's Centre for Architecture and Urbanism Studies, in the context of her doctoral thesis 'Portuguese Agricultural Colonies built by the Junta de Colonização Interna between 1936 and 1960: the house, the settlement, the territory', under the supervision of professors Sergio Fernandez, Marta Oliveira and Maria Manuel Oliveira. As part of FAUP's Doctoral Program in Architecture - PDA - study option B Architecture: Theory Project History, the thesis was presented at FAUP on November 23, 2016 and was discussed by Fernando Oliveira Baptista, Madalena Pinto da Silva, Sérgio Fernandez, Walter Rossa and Carlos Guimarães (president of the jury).

The works selected for the FAD awards are part of the El mejor diseño del año exhibition, on show until January 7, 2024 at the Disseny Hub Barcelona . The winners of the various FAD awards for Architecture, Architecture and Interior Design, International and Thought and Criticism were announced on October 19.
