The UNESCO Chair in Heritage, Cities and Landscapes. Sustainable Management, Conservation, Planning and Design, awarded to the University of Porto through FAUP, and the Parish Council of Ramalde have signed a cooperation agreement, with a view to the development by students of the ongoing training course 'Heritage and Landscape. Management, Analysis, Design' of revitalization proposals for the central core of the parish of Ramalde, where various elements of its pre-industrial matrix still persist.
The protocol signing ceremony, held on October 4, included speeches by the President of Ramalde Parish Council, Patrícia Rapazote, and by FAUP and FLUP professors Teresa Cunha Ferreira and Maria Leonor Botelho, respectively.
The session was attended by students from the continuing education course 'Heritage and Landscape. Management, Analysis, Design', part of the UNESCO Chair and taught by Professors Teresa Cunha Ferreira (FAUP), Maria Leonor Botelho (FLUP), Teresa Portela Marques (FCUP) and Xavier das Neves Romão (FEUP). The students, who come from different nationalities - Portugal, Brazil, Italy, France, Germany and Finland - had the opportunity to visit the study area on which they will be working in the first semester of this academic year.
The President of the Ramalde Parish Council stressed the great opportunity to have different perspectives on the parish's heritage in a broad sense - material and immaterial, natural and built, ancient and contemporary. He also mentioned the fact that Ramalde is the second largest parish in the city of Porto with around 39,000 inhabitants, and is the only Eco-parish in the municipality, facing the emerging challenges of inclusive and sustainable urban development.
The session included a presentation by Maria Beleza Juncal, Master in Art History, who developed her Master's degree in Art History, Heritage and Visual Culture (FLUP) at the Ramalde Parish Council, reflecting on the important urban transformations that have taken place since the 19th century and which have obliterated the rural matrix of the place, superimposing other narratives, validated by a survey of the Ramalde community, marked by industrial, business, sporting and residential presence.
