Siza Barroque, Program opens with Conference by Eduardo Souto de Moura Siza Barroque

April - December 2024, Soares dos Reis National Museum and Clérigos Church

'Siza Barroco' is a research project developed over the last three years at the Center for Architecture and Urbanism Studies of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (CEAU-FAUP) which aims to highlight the relationship between the idea of Baroque and the work of Álvaro Siza.

The results of the research, observed from a curatorial and not merely monographic perspective, will now be presented in a vast cultural program designed for a wide audience through a diverse set of events open to the city.

The links between Álvaro Siza's architecture and the Baroque are present in various authors who have written about Portugal's first "Ptritzker", as well as in the way he himself, referring to Porto, and to Nasoni, in his own written texts, announces his interest and commitment to learning more about Baroque architecture and the city. As a trend in art in general and architecture in particular, the Baroque wanted to build a new world on the basis of the old one, which it believed was unprepared for the present and the future to come.

The proposal of the research team led by researchers José Miguel Rodrigues, Director of CEAU and professor at FAUP, and Joana Couceiro, Researcher at CEAU-FAUP, is to verify the presence of Baroque ideas and ideals in Álvaro Siza's work, seeking to understand how much this is an architecture without time.

"It was a matter of pursuing a path, a natural path, aware that placing the idea of the Baroque and Álvaro Siza's architecture side by side would bring gains in knowledge to both parties," says the team, stressing that "if, on the one hand, Siza's architecture is better understood in the light of the (ideological) Baroque, the (chronological) Baroque is also more intelligible with Siza's work."

The program, which begins in April and runs until December 2024, includes conferences, an exhibition, a colloquium and a concert that cross and intertwine Siza's architecture, Nasoni's architecture, gilded woodcarving, Baroque-contemporary music, etc.
