Abstract
The object of this thesis is to study the watermills of Baixo Ave as a heritage element, structuring a river ecosystem, indispensable for the preservation of the Ave Valley's cultural landscape. Based on an investigation into their past, present and future, with architectural design as the main subject of analysis, interpretation and proposal: we present a narrative of the historical evolution of Ave's molinological heritage; we characterize the territorial relations of the "system" and the "molinological nucleus", the architectural designs in the aquatic-fluvial environment, the constructive specificities, as well as the traditional technological typologies. Likewise: we analyze case studies of intervention in this heritage; we reflect on the new uses; and, finally, we experience in architectural practice the main challenges arising from the specificities of intervention in the molinological heritage, with a view to its safeguarding, preservation and enhancement. - R.
