Exploration/creation workshop 'Peças Descarradas: A Origem dos Materiais'

January 24 - February 1, 2024 (working days/flexible participation)FAUP and EAAD + visits

Information and registration here until January 22 nadanovo.org

In this first activity of the NADA NOVO FORUM project, the workshop 'Discarded Pieces: The Origin of Materials' proposes exploring the paths of the debris of the buildings we demolish to renovate the city and their potential for reuse. We look at the social values of material heritage, environmental sustainability and gender inequalities in the construction professions.

Where are these 'stray pieces'? How are the 'mines' where they accumulate scattered throughout the territory? abandoned buildings? demolition companies? construction companies? warehouses? museums? informal collections? scrap dealers? In what ways can we qualify their 'values'? What is their aesthetic? symbolic? spatial? political potential? What socio-economic processes got them here? What uncertain futures might they have? Who are the people who deal with this hidden aspect of construction, and what are their motives?

Participants are challenged to create, in an exploratory and speculative process, symbolic objects that point to reinterpretations and aesthetic meanings that go beyond the reductive notion of the map as a utilitarian tool for geographical orientation or the physical representation of a territory. The aim is to map the relational logics of the stray pieces, making visible processes that cross planetary dynamics, which are present in themselves but are beyond themselves.

The results of the workshop will contribute to future talks and exhibitions to be held in Porto and Guimarães.

Target audience: higher education students, professionals and the general public.

Registration: NADA NOVO members, students and unemployed 15€ / professionals and general public 40€. Maximum number of participants 25. Registration until January 22 subject to confirmation after proof of payment.
