The inauguration of the exhibition and the launch of the book ‘Matosinhos - Arquitetura e Urbanismo em três modernidades’ (Matosinhos - Architecture and Urbanism in three modernities) will take place on Saturday 18 January at 3pm at the Museu da Memória de Matosinhos.

The presentation session of the book, published by Matosinhos Town Council, CEAU-FAUP and Afrontamento, will include the participation of architects Teresa Cunha Ferreira and Ana Catarina Costa, geographer Álvaro Domingues and sociologist Virgílio Borges Ferreira.

The project is the result of an invitation from the Matosinhos City Council to the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto to carry out an unprecedented study on the evolution of contemporary architecture and its impact on the urban, cultural, tourist and economic-social development of the municipality of Matosinhos, from the construction of the Port of Leixões to the present day.

The work is part of FAUP's Centre for Architecture and Urbanism Studies (CEAU) and benefits from the collaboration of researchers with different backgrounds: architecture, geography, sociology: Teresa Cunha Ferreira, Álvaro Domingues, Ana Catarina Costa, Carlos Machado, Clara Pimenta do Vale, Rui Fernandes Póvoas and Virgílio Borges Ferreira.

The study is an exploratory essay that can launch other interpretative readings and perspectives on Matosinhos. Mapping more than 100 architectural and urban facts, framed in three modernities (with different times, rhythms and scales that define their social and political context), the study covers a time span from the beginning of the construction of the Port of Leixões in 1884 to the closure of the Petrogal Refinery in 2022.

The exhibition can be visited at the Museu da Memória de Matosinhos until 27 April, from Tuesday to Friday, between 10:00 and 13:00 and 15:00 and 18:00, and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, between 15:00 and 18:00.

The book and exhibition are co-ordinated by Álvaro Domingues, Ana Catarina Costa and Teresa Cunha Ferreira, with consultancy and exhibition design by Ivo Poças Martins and graphic design by Manuel Granja.
