Launch of the book 'Nuno Portas | Pedro Vieira de Almeida: Teoria e desenho da arquitectura em Portugal, 1956-1974' by Tiago Lopes Dias Launch of the book
June 17, 2025, Tuesday, 6:30 pm, Marques da Silva Foundation
On June 17, at 6 p.m., the Marques da Silva Foundation will host the presentation of the book ‘Nuno Portas | Pedro Vieira de Almeida: Teoria e desenho da arquitectura em Portugal, 1956-1974’, by Tiago Lopes Dias, researcher at CEAU-FAUP, with an “antiprólogo” by José Ángel Sanz Esquide, co-published by the Marques da Silva Foundation / Edições Afrontamento.
The presentation of the book will include speeches by Helena Roseta, an architect with a remarkable career in defending the right to housing and the city, and Pedro Teixeira, a professor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto, whose research focuses on the economics of higher education, human capital and the history of economic thought. Also present will be the author, Tiago Lopes Dias, the publishers - represented by Fátima Vieira (President of the Marques da Silva Foundation) and José Ribeiro (Edições Afrontamento) - and Rui Jorge Garcia Ramos, who supervised the doctoral thesis together with José Ángel Sanz Esquide.
The book reveals the research, analysis and reflection carried out by the author on the work written, designed and built during the period of training and early professional activity of the architects Nuno Portas (b.1934) and Pedro Vieira de Almeida (1933-2011). This is a doctoral research project which seeks to respond to an initial intuition: that the maturity evident in some landmark works of architecture in Portugal in the second half of the 20th century is not, after all, just the result of an essentially empirical practice or independent of a theoretical framework.
Admission is free, subject to capacity.
