'Ilhas do Porto: estratégias de intervenção' Cycle of talksCommensality with Marta Sousa and Aitor Varea Oro
4th December 2024, Wednesday, 1.30pm, L - Bar, FAUP
On 4 December, at 1.30pm, there will be a panel discussion on the cycle of talks ‘Porto Islands: intervention strategies’ with Marta Sousa and Aitor Varea Oro.
This session will discuss how architects can and should occupy a place prior to the existence of the commission, and why this work, when anchored in the logic of learning by doing, serves to qualify both the territory and the agents who have the capacity to create and demand a fairer city.
The series of talks asks how different agents in the process of requalifying predominant elements in the city will make their experience of working in this specific context known to the academic community.
The initiative, a collaboration between the Student Technical Support Office (GATE) - a working group made up of students and based at the FAUP - the Inhabit Programme and the Parte Collective, aims to explore the various possibilities for building architectural commissions in the context of public policies and to debate the process of rehabilitating the morphology-typology of the ‘island’ with and in the community.
Aitor Varea Oro and Marta Sousa are architects and researchers at MDT-CEAU-FAUP. Since 2017 they have been working on the rehabilitation of Porto's islands, mediating between the various stakeholders to facilitate access to the technical and financial support needed to improve living conditions in these territories.
