Grand Tour #3 Porto 'Updating the Grand Tour. Memory and Invention of the European Built Environment'
June 5 - 14, 2025, FAUP
Between June 5 and 14, 2025, FAUP will host the ‘Grand Tour #3’ mission, as part of the European project 'UpGranT - Updating the Grand Tour. Memory and Invention of the European Built Environment' (2023-1-IT02-KA220-HED-000158377), funded by the European Union through the Erasmus+ - Cooperation in Higher Education program.
The initiative brings together 36 students and 14 lecturers from six European architecture schools in Porto, with the aim of revisiting and updating the concept of the Grand Tour as a privileged formative practice for the training of architects and, in particular, architecture students.
The program includes architectural itineraries of different types, an international student workshop (Intensive Programme for Learners), work meetings and a training session for teachers. The workshop will take place at the FAUP Museum and will include a series of sessions open to the community.
Highlights include testimonies by Maria da Conceição Melo, about her travel experience with João Álvaro Rocha, on June 10, at 4:30 p.m., and Luísa Moura, who will share travel memories with Eduardo Souto de Moura, on June 12, at the same time. The workshop will close on June 14 with the final presentation of the work and, at 12 noon, a lecture by Nuno Melo Sousa, who will reflect on travel in his architectural practice.
The FAUP team involved in the project is made up of professors Helder Casal Ribeiro (principal investigator), José Miguel Rodrigues and Sílvia Ramos.
The ‘Grand Tour #3’ is organized by FAUP, the host institution, and includes the participation of the Politecnico di Milano, the Alma Mater Studiorum - University of Bologna, the Art Academy of Latvia, the School of Architecture Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the Estonia Art Academy. UpGranT's institutional partners are: the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, the Manoel de Oliveira Cinema House, the Casa da Arquitectura - Portuguese Architecture Center, the Marques da Silva Foundation, the João Álvaro Rocha Pro-Architecture Association, the Abade Pedrosa Museum / International Museum of Contemporary Sculpture - Santo Tirso, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation - Art Library and the Livraria Lello Foundation.
