FAUP exhibition 'More than Houses: How will we live in April 2074? Exhibition
12 February to 25 April 2025
'A-mostra FAUP' brings together the work of FAUP students who took part in the exhibition ‘More than Houses: How will we live in April 2074?’ at MUDE - Museu do Design, in Lisbon, from 27 September 2024 to 26 January 2025, curated by architects Teresa Novais and Luís Tavares Pereira.
The exhibition took place as part of the More than Houses programme, organised by FAUP to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the April 1974 Revolution. It brought together around sixty proposals developed over the course of the 2023/2024 academic year by around 1,751 students and 281 teachers from all of Portugal's higher education institutions for Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Fine Arts.
'A-mostra FAUP' also includes the ‘three examples of overcoming the problem of public housing after 25 April 1974’ highlighted by the curators of the “More than Houses” Programme: Casal das Figueiras in Setúbal (312 dwellings built, 1975-79); Quinta da Malagueira in Évora (1100 dwellings, 1977-98); and Edifício das Lameiras in Famalicão (290 dwellings, 1978-83) - ‘models of the future that should be recovered as an object of reflection for current and future housing policies’.
FAUP's participation
FAUP's participation reflected the school's ongoing commitment to base its identity on a close proximity to reality. This conviction is visible not only in the presence of various professors who combine teaching with professional experience in architecture or research, but also, and especially, in the space where the concerns of students, and consequently of society, resonate, which have been given particular expression in the freely proposed themes of master's dissertations and doctoral theses. In addition to various work proposals integrated into Curricular Units from various years and fields of study, the FAUP centred its participation on the initiative More than Houses: Freedom, Plurality, Foresight. Taking as a reference the experience of the Local Ambulatory Support Service (SAAL) in Porto, in which students and teachers from the Architecture course actively participated, a 14-day workshop is organised in which more than 600 students (FAUP, FBAUP, FCUP and FLUP), teachers and researchers from various disciplinary areas, organised into 44 “brigades”, each with students from various years, to project what the future of housing could be in the next 50 years.
The initiative includes a series of conferences, round tables, debates, presentations, concerts and films open to the general public, as well as a programme organised by the FAUP Students' Association/Coletivo Parte that includes, among other events, the lunchtime talks series Comensalidades.
