Applications until 31st October 2024
An international selection procedure is open until 31 October 2024 for the recruitment of an Entry-Level PhD to carry out research activities in the scientific area of Biological Sciences, within the scope of the ‘Fishing Architecture’ project (Ref. ERC-2021-COG 101044244 FISH-A), funded by the European Commission - Horizon Europe, underway at FAUP.
‘Fishing Architecture’ is a research project coordinated by researcher André Tavares at CEAU-FAUP, which aims to trace the ecological history of North Atlantic architecture from cod, sardines and tuna in case studies in the United States, Canada, Iceland, England, Norway, France and Portugal.
The entry-level doctoral student will regularly carry out research and development activities and all other scientific and technical activities in the missions of the respective Centre for Architecture and Urbanism Studies and the University of Porto in particular:
a. Reference the state of the art of scientific literature related to the biology and populations of cod, sardines and tuna in the North Atlantic, e.g. life cycles, behaviours and ecosystems, ecology of species in the North Atlantic;
b. Compilation and representation (for the purpose of communication with the general public) of referenced scientific literature, contributing to the development of the multidisciplinary research carried out by the Fish-A group;
c. Evaluating the historical evolution of the biomass of cod, sardine and tuna populations in the North Atlantic; and developing spatial representations of the evolutionary history of these species;
d. Implementing and interpreting meta-analyses of information, e.g. identifying trends in the biomass of specific fish populations in relation to selected architectural cases;e. The researcher will be responsible for regularly carrying out research and development activities and other scientific and technical tasks within the scope of the ‘Fishing Architecture’ research project, in particular: monitoring the implementation of the various work packages; developing archival work, systematising information and representing two case studies that are part of the project; participating and collaborating in the preparation of scientific articles and other productions associated with the project; supporting the organisation of scientific activities; developing original research. The tasks will be carried out in collaboration with a multidisciplinary research team covering a wide range of disciplines including architecture, design, archaeology and marine biology.
Candidates may apply if they hold a PhD in Biological Sciences and/or Fisheries Sciences or in related areas and have a scientific and professional curriculum in the scientific areas of this call for applications and a profile appropriate to the activities to be carried out.
Special Admission Requirements:
a. Experience in Ichthyology or Fisheries;
b. PhD less than 5 years ago;
c. Willingness to travel frequently (to be stated in the motivation letter)
Preferential Selection Requirements:
a. Knowledge of fish biology, e.g. life cycles, behaviour and population dynamics;
b. Experience in research projects;
c. Authorship or co-authorship of scientific articles;
d. Motivation to conduct research on the project's themes
e. Excellent spoken and written English language skills;
f. International experience.
