Maria de Fátima Morais de Aguiar e Castro

Maria de Castro is an Architect currently developing projects in collaboration with other colleagues. She holds a MSc in Sustainable Construction and Rehabilitation and a PhD in Civil Engineering. She is a Researcher Project Lead at University of Porto - Center for Studies in Architecture and Urbanism (CEAU), currently working on HBSAtool-PT Project (Project design measures for a more sustainable healthcare buildings). She is a member of the Technical Commission (TC) of iiSBE (International Initiative for a Sustainable Built Environment) and Secretary of TC of iiSBE Portugal, which aims to adapt the international building sustainability assessment tool (SBTool) to the Portuguese environmental, societal and economic contexts. She is an author identified by ISI Web of Science and Scopus databases with several articles, and she has been participating in the organisation of many events in the field of Sustainable Architecture and Construction. Since 2011, she has been taking part in oral presentations on these topics at many international and national conferences, seminars and workshops. She published two theses in the sustainability of healthcare buildings and a significant number of scientific articles (in indexed journals) and books in the same research domain. She has been participating as an architect, since 2009, in projects of new and retrofitted buildings, having specialised in the area of health buildings (e.g., Portuguese Oncology Institute of Porto, Conde de Ferreira Psychiatric Hospital, Dental Clinic in Santo Tirso, Nursing Home in Estoril and other in Viana do Castelo, ...). This is her primary expertise and her principal interest. She wants to contribute to better healthcare buildings' performance, improving their space flexibility and quality to achieve better results in daily-life routines in line with sustainable issues and different life cycle concerns.

Regarding the desire to achieve BREEAM certification for the "LiDL - North Warehouse", the objective of the report was to meet the Indicators LE 02 (Ecological value of the place and protection of ecological characteristics) and LE05 (Impact on biodiversity to be long term) of Category 12.0 (Land Use and Ecology) of BREEAM International New Construction 2016. Thus, the Ecological Assessment of the site was carried out, as also a Long-term Biodiversity Impact Assessment.
