Manuel Jorge Moreira de Carvalho

Manuel Jorge Carvalho (Porto, 1994) graduated as an Architect from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP, 2019), where he completed his Master's Degree in Architecture with the thesis titled "Da Casa do jardineiro, Encontro(s) no anónimo," under the guidance of Professor Manuel Mendes, earning the highest grade of 20. As part of the Swiss-European Mobility Program, he attended the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) (2016-2017), where he had the opportunity to contribute to the writing of various articles published in EPFL student journals, notably including "Matières en devenir" and "L'atelier". During his academic tenure, he served as a member of the Monitoring Committee for the Integrated Master's Degree in Architecture at FAUP and co-organized events for critical discussion and reflection on teaching, pedagogical practices and curricula in the field of Architecture. Notable among these events was the "Quinzena ’15 - Por uma escola participada" forum, where he co-chaired the "Architecture Practices. School and Profession" working group. Recognized for his academic achievements, he was awarded the "Ricardo Spratley" prize (2020) and the "Pedro Branco" prize (2015) for his academic journey at FAUP. He graduated from the Integrated Master's Degree in Architecture with the highest distinction at FAUP in 2019, achieving a grade of 17. Between 2018 and 2019, he collaborated with Architect Manuel Aires Mateus under a scholarship awarded by the Fundación Arquia. In 2021, he enrolled in the Doctoral Program in Architecture at FAUP (PDA-FAUP), specializing in Theory and Project Practices (T2P), under the coordination of Professors José Miguel Rodrigues, Nuno Brandão Costa, and João Pedro Serôdio. He completed the first academic year (non-degree) with a grade of 18. During this period, he co-organized the "PhD Forum 2022 - What is research in Architecture?" colloquium, facilitating communication and sharing of ongoing research works at the Center for Studies of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto, where he presented the first abstract for "Arquitectura, defesa do impreciso". Since 2020, he has been practicing in his own studio, exploring the subtle encounters and boundaries between an artistic drawing experience and the disciplinary condition of Architecture in his design actions. Simultaneously, he maintains collaborative practices with other studios, participating in over 50 projects of various scales and programs, notably achieving the 2nd place in the international public competition for the conception of "Museu Gaia Ambiente," co-authored with Daniel Torres Ferreira and Sofia Granjo. His ongoing research delves into the architectural works of Álvaro Siza and his influential contributions to the delineation of project autonomy within the architectural domain. This investigation is underpinned by the tenets of "Imprecise" and "Vocation of Architecture". The research endeavour is oriented towards exploring the feasibility of concretising a theoretical discourse surrounding an architectural design practice, with a specific emphasis on its capacity to critically interrogate, experientially engage with and renew the intrinsic vocation of Architecture.
