Carlos Eduardo Santos Barroso

Carlos Barroso is Architect (pre-bologna degree, 2007) by U. Porto, Master in Sustainable Construction and Rehabilitation (2012), and Doctor in Civil Engineering (2018), both by U. Minho, Portugal. Dr. Barroso started his research career at the Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering (ISISE), in the Historical Masonry Structures (HMS) in 2013, where he stayed until 2019. Since 2019, Dr. Barroso is affiliated with the Centre for Studies in Architecture and Urbanism (CEAU-FAUP), where he develops research on heritage conservation and management topics. He also acted as MSc dissertation supervisor and opponent at the Faculty of Architecture (FAUP), and in tutorial tasks within the Erasmus Mundus Masters Course in Structural Analysis of Monuments, coordinated by U. Minho. Dr. Barroso doctoral research, (FCT grant funded), provided a solid contribution to the advance of knowledge on Portuguese vernacular heritage, promoting also awareness to its high cultural value. His experimental research on schist and granite is a significant contribution to the very scarce literature on the topic. Within the Vernacular Corbelled Domes Heritage of Northwest Portugal project (2013-2019), Dr. Barroso gave a solid contribution to the recognition of the high cultural value associated with mountain range heritage, contributing with grounded technical knowledge, innovation in the use of advanced survey techniques, strong social engagement, conservation guidelines and outreach through regional media. The ongoing Wolf Traps Heritage of Peneda Gerês National Park project, is providing ground-breaking scientific knowledge in the use of advanced virtual visualization techniques to study and create awareness about remotely located forms of high cultural value architectures, having achieved national broadcast television coverage. Dr. Barroso studies on structural and durability issues of schist masonry provided a new experimental procedure and innovative knowledge on its performance under accelerated aging effects (salt weathering), fundamental for new conservation techniques and industry products. He was awarded two merit-based research grants by ISISE. Dr. Barroso has been active regarding the internationalization of his research, namely developing collaborative activity with Spanish and Belgium researchers on vernacular heritage and traditional rubble stone masonry, in scientific fund-raising with French and Spanish R&D centres (Interreg calls) and in tutorial tasks within the Erasmus Mundus Masters Course in Structural Analysis of Monuments, coordinated by U. Minho. Dr. Barroso participated in 2 research projects, published 16 peer-review articles (4 in journals and 12 in conferences), gave oral presentations in 3 national and 5 international conferences. He participated actively in several scientific knowledge dissemination activities, and he is deeply involved in the preparation of research proposals to attract international research funding. He complements his research with industry knowledge from selected professional activities as Architect, (award a best design prize, 2012).
