Architecture4Ageing
Architecture4Ageing is a project that we are developing with Porto4Ageing, a consortium that brings together several organisations, the vast majority of which are situated within the Porto Metropolitan Area.
Our research question focuses on the features that housing buildings and outdoor spaces should include “ageing in place”. We are working individually on developing strategies to certify “lifelong housing”, i.e. built environments that provide a satisfactory response to these needs in all life stages.
Our aim is:
• to research “ageing in place” policies linked to housing, including indoor and outdoor spaces, whether private or public;
• to approach “ageing in place” strategies relating to the built environment, recognising that they go far beyond the mere question of accessibility;
• to develop manuals of good practices, checklists and “lifelong housing” certification models; analysis services for architectural and urban projects; reports on recommendations for housing policies;
• to define joint strategies with different stakeholders, academics, technicians in the field of health, investors in housing developments, constructors and the communities;
• to monitor, with a multidisciplinary group, the implementation of national policies and their legislative support, as well as to provide specialised monitoring for the integration of European standards into the national legal framework.
We are therefore focusing on both new housing construction and refurbishment, underlining that “ageing in place” responses and “lifelong housing” are added values that must be recognised and promoted both by public institutions, the real estate market and its agents.
